The Barents Energy Working Group—EWG
EWG was established in early 1998 as an ad hoc group with a three-year mandate from the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, which includes Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia. The mandate was in March 2001 renewed for another three years. The chairmanship is held by Norway for the current mandate period.
The work and results achieved have generated a growing support and attention also from the European Union and other multilateral actors.
EWG's primary mandate is to promote improved energy efficiency in the Barents Region, especially in the Russian part.
Other priorities are to contribute to enhanced co-operation in the energy sector, promote utilisation of renewable energy sources and improve information and communication regarding energy matters.
The group acts as catalyst towards decision makers, investors, financiers and other parties. EWG coordinates its work with other initiatives that have an impact on the energy sector in the Barents region.
